LEWISBURG -

Students at Greenbrier East High School and Middle School are on their way to becoming national champions in a bridge building competition.

This year several students competed in the West Point Bridge Competition and one team from the middle school is ranked second in the nation right now.

Kyra Lampert and Summer McElwain are headed to the Navel Academy in Annapolis, Maryland at the end of the month to compete for a top secret grand prize.

The competition is based on how fast the team can built a sturdy and inexpensive bridge on a computer software program.

But the students said they actually are learning what it's like in the real world.

Joseph Sampson said, "I thought it was always kind of a coincidence that bridges looked cool with the smooth turns and the up and downs but when you have a smooth bridge and it looks cool it's generally going to function better."

Cordel Bostic said, "It's just really fun I get to do something besides just school work and actually go out and do some real stuff."

Five teams from Greenbrier East High School will head to states on May 18 where they could bring home the top prize of $400.

The middle school team said it's been fun learning things they never thought they would.

McElwain said, "One of our favorite tricks is diamonds are a girls best friend for the pattern you want to have a diamond in it, it works out really well."

This year nine teams from West Virginia are competing at nationals and the students said they're proud to represent our state.

Bostic said, "This just makes it even better because we get to show that we are some smart people here and we have people that can do some amazing things."

And it's not just Greenbrier East that's doing well in the competition.

Students from Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley are ranked number one right now in the nation and could bring home the grand prize of $10,000.
