Shady Spring's Connor Heading to WVU

SHADY SPRING -

Shady Spring's Chase Connor was a popular man when it came to recruiting.

"Coastal Carolina, Northern Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, Winthrop, Stetson, New Hampshire, Stony Brook, Evansville," Connor said. He had 12 offers.

Last year, Connor committed to play basketball at Radford, but an accident in August gave him time to think.

"Once I broke my leg and had time to reconsider everything, I de-committed and wanted another route," he said.

That led the 6'1'' two-guard to rethink his options.

"WVU talked to me in the middle of my high school season. We started talking more and more, after the Scott Brown game they offered me the walk-on spot," he said.

That game was just this past Saturday. Chase thinks WVU's past year also played a part in the recruitment. Who wouldn't someone that averages 27 points a game?

"They were having a rough season and then they realized I can shoot the basketball," Connor said.

Tigers head coach Steve Clark says this wasn't a surprise to anyone that saw Connor play.

"We knew he was going to be a player. We just didn't know how good he was going to be and how hard he was going to work down the road," he said.

Connor will be a preferred walk-on, meaning he will not be given scholarship money. And now that the process is over, he has time to look back on it.

"It was a lot of fun while it was going on, getting all the phone calls. and talking to different people all the time," he said.

Connor plans to major in athletic training.

Day five of the New Orleans Saints training camp at the Greenbrier brought much different temperatures than the Saints are used to at their home site in Louisiana.Long sleeves, long pants, and even some jackets could be spotted at training camp. Not your typical summer day in West Virginia with unseasonal highs for this time of year, and far from what the Saints are used to."When you start to sweat and then the wind blows you're like, oh we aren't in Louisiana are we?
