United Bankshares Inc. on April 25 reported first-quarter earnings of $21.6 million, up from $21.0 million in the first quarter of 2012.

United has consolidated assets of approximately $8.3 billion with 115 full service offices in West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.

On Jan. 30, United announced the signing of a definitive merger agreement with Virginia Commerce Bancorp, headquartered in Arlington, Va. VCBI has 28 banking offices, one residential mortgage origination office and one wealth management office located in the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C.
