UPDATE: Geno Smith to NY Jets; Austin to St. Louis

UPDATE: Geno Smith drafted by New York Jets

Former West Virginia University quarterback Geno Smith was picked up by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft.  He was the 39th overall draft pick.

Two West Virginia University football standouts were in attendance Thursday for the 2013 NFL Draft, but only one went home with a new team.

Tavon Austin was picked 8th overall in the first round of the NFL Draft by St. Louis.  The wide receiver has been in contact with the Rams and was excited about  their selection, but not surprised because they have shown a lot of interest in him in the off-season.  Austin had an outstanding 2012 season decorated with impressive statistics such as 112 catches for 1,289 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Former teammate Geno Smith did not get the call Thursday night in a turn of events no one expected.  Many thought Smith would be the first quarterback selected, but the Buffalo Bills chose Florida State's E.J. Manuel instead.  A disappointed Smith left Radio City Music Hall 3 picks early but not before congratulating Manuel.  "Geno was one of the first guys to come and give me a hug," said Manuel.

Though Smith displayed good sportsmanship to his peers, he told ESPN Thursday that he would not be in attendance for the second round and will be heading home.  Recent reports say he had a change of heart and will be there.

With his 2012 resume including throwing 4,205 yards and 42 touchdowns, it is very likely he will get the call in the second round on Friday.
