Tebow's release could mean playing time for Geno

Posted: Updated:

Last week many people watched as Geno Smith sat through an agonizing first round of the NFL draft and didn't receive the call until the second round when he was picked up by the Jets. Things started looking up Monday for the former WVU quarterback as he will contend for his new teams starting spot.

The New York Jets waived back up quarterback Tim Tebow Monday leaving Smith to challenge Mark Sanchez for the starting role.  Five quarterbacks main on the roster but Smith is now in prime position to earn some playing time.  In a press conference Saturday, even before the release of Tebow, Smith was confident with a lot of work he would make his mark in the National Football League.

"My goal is to be a franchise quarterback.  But as of right now, there is a lot of work to be done," said Smith.

While Smith battles it out for the lead role on the field, Tebow's professional career is on the chopping block.  Will he be picked up as a quarterback or be forced to switch positions to remain in the NFL?  Some believe he may make the switch to the Canadian Football League.  Teams only have until 4PM Tuesday to put in a claim for him.
