"Wouldn't you want your last message to your family to be that you thought enough of them to take care of them one last time?"

That's the simple way Liberty National Sales Manager Brooke Kessler explains why life insurance is so important.

Kessler said it may not be a pleasant thought, but every person is born with a need for final expenses.

"Think about it: We insure our vehicles, our health, but what is the most important thing to us? Our families," Kessler said. "Why would you want to leave your family with a burden of finance when they are in a state of mourning?"

Kessler said Liberty National is a company of Torch Mark, and it offers insurance, supplemental plans and mortgage protection, among many other services.

Kessler said the two main types of life insurance are whole life, which is designed for a need such as funeral expenses and final expenses. She said that type is more expensive, because the premiums are built on the age and health of a person when he or she qualifies, but the premium is locked in and never changes.

The second type is term life insurance, which is designed to be terminated because it is for needs during a set period of time.

"You have to re-qualify after every term, so your premiums are not locked in, and they go up every term," she said. "Term life is cheaper, but not forever."

And according to a 2009 clinical research study from Harvard University, 62 percent of all personal bankruptcies filed in 2007 in the United States were due to illness and medical bills, and 78 percent of all the families involved had medical insurance at the start of their illness.

At Allegheny Insurance in Elkins, several new companies were added to its line of carriers.

Allegheny is an independent insurance agency, rooted in predecessors who have provided personalized insurance options since 1893.

And that independence helps the company provide personalized service.

"Our status as an independent agency allows us to seek out the best options for our clients," Allegheny Insurance Services President Jay Wallace said in a news release. "Even more important than our insurance partners, however, are Allegheny's people."

Allegheny serves clients throughout West Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The two new carriers for Allegheny are the Cincinnati Insurance Company, which is available only through independent insurance agencies, Motorists Mutual, Travelers and BrickStreet Insurance.

"We tailor insurance programs to fit the individual needs of businesses and personal lifestyles," Wallace said. "We don't just take information over the telephone in 15 minutes nor have clients fill out an online questionnaire. "We build relationships and get to know people and their specific requirements."

The additions allow Allegheny to offer a full line of options from automobile, life, health, long-term care, disability, general liability and workers' compensation insurance.
