Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin is encouraging students to enter a statewide art contest to celebrate West Virginia's 150th birthday, his office recently announced.

Organized by the Department of Commerce, the contest is open to students from kindergarten-12th grade.

Participants will be divided into three different groups. Kindergarten through fifth grade will create a birthday card for West Virginia's sesquicentennial birthday.

Sixth through eighth grade and ninth through 12th grade students will create two-minute videos wishing West Virginia a happy birthday, Tomblin's news release states.

Themes for the videos are "happy 150th birthday West Virginia— what makes West Virginia unique" and "what makes West Virginia special?"

Winning artwork will be featured during the state's birthday celebration at the state Capitol, June 20-23, the news release continued.

Winning artists will receive Kindles and the winning student's classroom will receive gift cards for art supplies.

For applications and information about the contest, visit www.wvcommerce.org/art150.

Entries will be accepted through May 15.
