Integrated milling and turning operations may soon lead to more production, thanks to new equipment available at the Robert C. Byrd Institute's Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center in Huntington.

RCBI's new five-axis CNC Mill/Turn Center is part of Mori Seiki's NTX 2000 series of high precision, high efficiency integrated mill/turn centers. The machinery is designed for complex shapes and is ideal for the production of precision parts used in medical and measurement devices as well as the oil and gas industry.

By combining both milling and turning operations, manufactures can keep the work on one machine, reducing set-ups and handling, making the job more productive. The machine's footprint is 40 percent smaller than those of conventional models, meaning the integrated machine's technology frees space for other machines or technology.

The addition of the five-axis CNC Mill/Turn Center follows the December 2012 introduction of an Okuma MU-500-VA-L Machining Center at the RCBI Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center in Charleston.

RCBI Director and CEO Charlotte Weber said the two new pieces of equipment "represent the latest examples of RCBI's continuing effort to provide ready access to the latest manufacturing technology."

RCBI offers both leased use and technical training on the machining technology. For information or to schedule leased use for the Huntington equipment, call 304-781-1689, or 304-720-7738 for the Charleston equipment.
