CHARLESTON, WV -

Frontier Communications is adding broadband service in eight West Virginia counties to its discount phone service Federal Communications Commission pilot program.

In Calhoun, Jackson, Mason, Pleasants, Ritchie, Roane, Wirt and Wood counties, along with several Ohio counties, the Lifeline discount phone service for qualified low-income consumers will include broadband discounts and digital literacy. The pilot project is scheduled to last a year.

"Frontier is pleased to be taking part in the FCC Lifeline Broadband Pilot program," Frontier West Virginia's Senior Vice President and General Manager Dana Waldo said in a news release. "As a company committed to being the state's leading broadband provider, we see the Lifeline program creating greater access to broadband and awareness of its value."

Frontier has been working through the FCC's Connect America Fund. According to information from the FCC, it recently changed its Universal Service Fund and Inter-carrier Compensation Systems to speed up its plan for creating broadband infrastructure for the 18 million Americans the FCC has identified who live in rural areas of the United States without broadband.

Frontier also has worked with Future Generations, a West Virginia nonprofit organization, to provide computer training to participants so they know the true value of broadband.

"Providing opportunities for low-income West Virginians to obtain broadband is critical in building our state's capacity for continued economic growth," Future Generations Rural America Director LeeAnn Shreve said in a news release.
