BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -

An ordinance that has caused a lot of controversy in Bluefield, W.Va. is now official after a brief extension.

The Bluefield City Council voted to enact a new ordinance on pit bulls in April 2013.  That ordinance bans people who live in the city from buying a pit bull.  While those who already owned a pit bull were required to register them in compliance with current city laws.  Those people had ten days to register their dog.  That deadline would have gone into effect last week, but the city opted to allow dog owners 10 business days to get their registered.  That deadline was Tuesday, May 7.

Pit bull owners who have not registered their pet with the Bluefield Police Department will face penalties or they will have to get rid of their dog.
