Area schools are on heightened alert after a Notre Dame High School student sent out a mass email early Friday morning.

Local law enforcement is actively looking for a 17-year-old white male, possibly wearing blue jeans, black athletic shoes, 5'10", 180 pounds, with sandy blonde hair. He may be armed and dangerous, according to an alert sent out by Fairmont State University.

Spokesman for the Catholic Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston Bryan Minor said that a young man sent a mass email in the early morning hours and expressed that he was depressed about something. There wasn't a specific threat made to students at Notre Dame, St. Mary's or the Fairmont Grade School, according to Minor.

"What really sticks out in the mind of administrators at the Diocese Office is that there has been outstanding cooperation and assistance with this young man's family, local law enforcement and teachers and faculty at the schools. There are plans in place for moments like these and they have worked out as planned," Minor said.

Notre Dame and St. Mary's students dismissed school at 1:15 p.m. Friday.

Police have asked the Marion County Board of Education to put its schools on lockdown as a precaution, according to a BOE official.

All Pierpont and Fairmont State employees and students have been asked to leave the main campus in Fairmont in a calm and orderly way as a precautionary measure, according to university officials. The campus is not on lockdown. Employees and staff are being asked to leave campus as a precautionary measure, university officials said.

Commencement rehearsal at Pierpont Community and Technical College was canceled Friday afternoon but officials said commencement will go on as scheduled, with line-up starting at 6 p.m. and commencement starting at 6:30 p.m.
