The rehabilitation of Tri-State Airport's 12-30 runway resulted in good things for the Huntington airport.

The South East Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives named the project the organization's 2013 project of the year. The announcement came last month at the SEC-AAAE's annual conference in Lexington, Ky.

The project included paving the airport's only runway, which is 7,016 feet long and 150 feet wide — a job that was completed in 54 hours over one weekend in an effort to minimize disruptions to commercial airline activity. According to airport officials, closing the airport's only runway and disrupting service was not an option.

Other elements of the project were completed over 120 six-hour night closures to accommodate scheduled FedEx flights operating from the airport. The night closures began at 10:30 p.m., after all scheduled flights, and ended at 4:30 a.m., before the day's scheduled flights began.

During the 54-hour runway closure, three paving teams worked side by side, placing more than 22,300 tons of P-401 asphalt concrete. About 70 equipment operators, laborers, supervisors, quality control and quality assurance personnel, electricians, painters and engineers were on-site over the weekend, and two asphalt concrete production mix plants produced more than 900 truckloads of asphalt concrete for the project. That phase of the project was completed six hours ahead of schedule. The entire project began April 18, 2012, and was completed Oct. 27, 2012.

In addition to the Project of the Year Award, the runway rehabilitation project also earned the National Asphalt Pavement Association's Quality in Construction Award.
