FAYETTEVILLE -

The May term of the Fayette County grand jury met on Tuesday, May 14 and wrapped up the next day.  There were 74 indictments handed down by the grand jury on crimes that ranged from murder to embezzlement.

At the top of the list was a first degree murder charge for Terreque Gray, 24, who is accused of killing Maurice McCain at an apartment in Oak Hill on Thursday, Jan. 18.  The apartment complex is on Mahan Street.  McCain had been shot.  Gray is being held in the Southern Regional Jail without bond.

A former Fayette County teacher who is living in Kanawha County was indicted by the grand jury. Maurice White, 63, was indicted on two counts of Third Degree Sexual Assault and two counts of Sexual Abuse by a Parent, Guardian, Custodian or Person in a Position of Trust.  White was arrested in August 2011 for allegedly having a relationship with a 14-year-old student at Valley High School.  White was a substitute teacher at the school.

A third indictment was for a Carl Cox who was indicted for Driving Under the Influence of drugs causing death, two counts of DUI causing bodily injury, Brandishing a Deadly Weapon and Possession of a Controlled Substance.  Those crimes come from a fatal accident in the Lavista area that happened in October 2012.  A 91-year-old woman was killed.  Two other people from Kentucky were injured in the accident.

A complete list of the indictments can be viewed at the link to the right.  Those who were indicted are divided into two groups.  One group will be arraigned in front of Judge John Hatcher at the Fayette County Courthouse on Thursday, May 23 at 9 a.m.   The other group is set to be arraigned in front of Judge Paul Blake at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 24.  That arraignment will be at the Fayette County Courthouse Annex.
