Toddler wandering in Oak Hill leads to mother's arrest

Posted: Updated:

The Fayette County Sheriff's Department arrested a 30-year-old mother after her child was found wandering the streets of Oak Hill.

Deputies were called to the Terry Avenue of Oak Hill at 9:54 a.m. on Thursday, May 16 when reports came in that an "infant child" was wandering in the street.  Deputy R.D. Stephens found the young child described as a "toddler" wandering in the roadway without apparent adult supervision.

Investigators identified Tina Louise Harris, 30, of Oak Hill as the mother of the child.  Harris was arrested and charged with Gross Child Neglect Creating the Risk of Bodily Injury.  She was arraigned and released on a $3,500 bond.  Child Protective Services was contacted and the child was taken into protective custody.

"Parents have a duty and responsibility to care for their minor children," said Sheriff Steve Kessler. "Allowing a child this young to wander away from home unsupervised, particularly near a busy roadway, is a tragedy waiting to happen."

The case is still under investigation.  If anyone has information about the incident is asked to contact the Fayette County Sheriff's Office at 304-574-4216 or submit a tip to the Crime Tips section of the department's web site.
