BECKLEY -

The Grand Jury in Raleigh County had some serious cases to review for the May term.  The indictments were handed out on Wednesday.

There were 89 people indicted on a variety of charges from First Degree Murder and Death of a Child by Child Abuse to Burglary and Fraud.  Nearly a third of the total indictments were directly drug related. Among those were charges of selling Oxycodone and Marijuana.  There was even one person, Augusta Blanchard, who was indicted on a charge of Delivering a Counterfeit Controlled Substance.

Among the most visible cases was that of James Green and Brandy Smallwood.  They are accused in the death of Smallwood's two-year-old boy.  Green was indicted on charges of First Degree Murder, Death of a Child by Child Abuse and Child Neglect Resulting in Death as well as several other charges. Smallwood was indicted on charges of Death of a Child by Child Abuse and Child Neglect Resulting in Death as well as several other charges. Smallwood's child died back in February at their home in Fairdale.  59News found out that Smallwood and Green had been married just hours before the incident where the child died.

In another Child Abuse case, Joseph Hailey was indicted on charges of Child Abuse with Serious Risk of Bodily Injury or Death and False Information Regarding Child's Injuries.  The incident happened in June 2012.  An investigation was opened after an infant was admitted to Raleigh General Hospital with a fractured skull and internal bleeding.  The child did recover.

Three men were indicted on charges related to a murder case out of Sprague that happened in November 2012.  Dominic Paige and Lavonte Paige were indicted on charges of First Degree Murder in the death of Danny Kennedy.  A third man, Antonio Wade, was indicted on a Felon in Possession of a Firearm charge.  The three men apparently got stuck in Kennedy's driveway on Cohen Street while turning around.  That lead to an argument where Kennedy was shot and killed.

Randy Jennings was indicted on charges of Attempted Murder, Malicious Wounding and Conspiracy.  Those charges come from a stabbing that happened in broad daylight on Neville Street in Beckley.  Jennings apparently stabbed Jamie Clay several times then ran off.  Beckley Police tracked him down 30 minutes later.

Another stabbing, this one in Cool Ridge, lead to a Malicious Wounding indictment against Ronnie Ransom, Jr.  Ransom allegedly stabbed Douglas Mills at PJ's bar in April 2012.

A man accused of beating up an 89-year-old man was indicted by the Grand Jury on charges of Malicious Wounding, Violent Crimes against the Elderly and Conspiracy.  Bryan Bolt is accused of attacking the man in his own home in March.

Two robbery cases that involved a police chase were also heard by the Grand Jury.

Carlos Burnside was indicted on charges of First Degree Robbery, Fleeing in a Vehicle and Battery on a Police Officer among other charges.  Burnside allegedly robbed a pair of convenience stores then lead police on a high speed chase that ended when he crashed his car into the Rising Star Child Care on South Kanawha Street in Beckley.

Christopher Lovelace was indicted for First Degree Robbery, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and Fleeing a Police Officer.  He was featured in the 59News Fugitive File back in November 2012.

The indictments were divided into three groups, depending on which Judge the suspects would be seen in front of.  Judge Kirkpatrick starts things off at 9 a.m. on May 28.  Suspects answering indictment in front of Judge Burnside will be seen at 11 a.m. and Judge Hutchinson will see suspects at 1:30 p.m.  All those who are being held in jail will be seen at 9 a.m.  A complete list of the indictments can be viewed at the link to the right.
