When Amber Elmore first moved to Charleston from her home on Watters Smith Memorial State Park in Harrison County, it was a real culture shock.

However, one person helped her not only adjust to a new lifestyle but also helped her remember where she came from, encouraging her to express her life through the written word.

Elmore's sixth grade teacher Donna Bailey told her she should be a writer. And that's exactly what she did.

"I've been writing since I was in sixth grade," Elmore said at her pre-release party at Cabela's, celebrating her newest book, "Betsy Beansprout Camping Guide."

Her new book's official world release will be June 25; however, kids got a chance to get a signed copy a little early and hear the book from Elmore herself.

Elmore's books follow the adventures of young Betsy Beansprout, a character Elmore says is based from her experience as a young child.

Like Elmore, Beansprout also lived at a state park in West Virginia. Her newest book tells kids how to have fun and be safe while out camping.

This book is the third in her series. One book teaches kids about bird watching and another teaches fire safety, a subject Elmore holds near and dear as a volunteer firefighter.

Although she has written for years, Betsy Beansprout is the first manuscript she submitted.

"I wanted this book series to be a way for people to learn about the beauty this state has to offer and about living simply and beautifully," she said.

And although she experienced the original culture shock from moving away from her state park home, Elmore says she doesn't plan on moving any time soon.

"We've set deep roots here," she said. "It's a great place to live and raise a child."
