Matheny marks opening of Kenova dealership

KENOVA -

A man stood and watched, concerned, as a tow truck turned over trailer of the kind used to haul coal. The trailer was still attached to a truck.

"If he's not careful he's going turn the truck over, too," the man said. But the truck went over, too.

Exactly as planned.

They were turned over so the tow truck operator could demonstrate the safe way of uprighting an overturned tractor-trailer. It was part of a celebratory but educational event June 8-9 at Matheny Freightliner Truck Center as Matheny Motors celebrated the opening of its new dealership in the Huntington area.

The tow show was aimed at people who buy or service heavy trucks, tow trucks and school buses highlighted allowed Matheny Motors President Tim Matheny and other company officials to meet people in their service area.

"We're obviously becoming familiar with the territory. We have six or seven counties in Kentucky and six or seven in Ohio. We're getting familiar with the customers and stocking a few more parts," Matheny said.

Matheny Motors acquired the assets of McCoy Freightliner, along U.S. 52 near Tri-State Airport, last December.

The dealership is expanding beyond Freightliner trucks. It is selling Thomas Built school buses and providing parts and service for them. It is also selling and servicing Hino trucks, Landall trailers and the Miller brand of towing equipment, particularly the Chevron, Century and Vulcan lines, Matheny said.

Matheny said his company retained all 31 people who had worked for McCoy Freightliner and hired four more — three in the mechanic shop and one collision center technician.

As part of its grand opening ceremony, the Matheny Freightliner Truck Center near Kenova is having a tow show for people who own or operate tow trucks.

Last week's two show had safety demonstrations and classes on such topics as removing a car from a parallel parking space without damage and how to open a locked luxury car, along with the demonstration of a rollover of a heavy-duty vehicle. There was also a workshop on safety matters related to dealing with electric vehicles.

Matheny Motors is based in Parkersburg, where it has dealerships selling new Buick, GMC and Subaru vehicles. It also has a commercial truck and school bus operation at nearby Mineral Wells, a commercial truck dealership at Nitro, pre-owned car dealerships at Parkersburg and in Marietta, Ohio, and a towing and recovery operation at Woodbridge, Va.
