Bluefield hospital to upgrade critical care units

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (AP) -

State regulators have approved Bluefield Regional Medical Center's plan to upgrade its intensive and coronary units.

Both units will be replaced with new, larger units. Construction is expected to begin later this year and to be completed by the spring of 2014.

The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports that hospital CEO Bill Hawley announced the $5 million project Tuesday. Hawley says the hospital received a certificate of need for the new units from the West Virginia Health Care Authority.

The existing units will remain in operation until the new ones are completed.
