BECKLEY -
A Fayette County man is behind bars after Beckley Police say he admitted to raping a woman in a mental hospital. Michael Settle of Lochgelly was arrested and taken to Southern Regional Jail around 10 p.m. June 16.

Police say he was a patient at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital's Psych Ward along with the woman he is accused of raping. Officers at Southern Regional Jail say Settle was brought in on a charge of sexual assault in the third degree.

Police say Settle checked himself into the psychiatric ward just a few hours before the alleged assault. Beckley Police officers were called in after a nurse caught him in the act. Officer Angie Stroud says she believes Settle was mentally stable when he was arrested. She says he gave a written confession- admitting to sexually assaulting the female patient, who is in her 60's.

The victim's husband tells 59 News he first became concerned when he showed up for visiting hours and his wife was wondering the halls unsupervised.

59News reached out to officials at Appalachian Regional Healthcare about the incident.  An official statement was released on Monday.

"We are aware of the allegations and they are being investigated internally by Beckley ARH and by members of law enforcement. Due to the ongoing nature of this investigation, we are unable to comment further at this time."
