A Martinsburg woman is suing a Maryland museum after she says the then-director publicly discredited a photo she believes is of Abraham Lincoln.

Acting as her own attorney, Ernestine Deloris Glessner filed the suit June 17 in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia against Surratt House Museum and Laurie Verge, alleging libel.

Seeking $100,000 in damages, Glessner said she had received new information in July 2012 for an ongoing research project she and others were working on for the past three years.

Glessner asserts scientific research proved the photo to be of Abraham Lincoln the night he was shot.

She then contacted members of the historical community and the media, the suit continues, to tell of her discovery.

Glessner's suit alleges Verge responded on the museum's website with, "I have dealt with Ernestine in the past. This is no more a photo of Abe Lincoln than it is of me. Ignore her."

Asking to proceed to bench trial, Glessner says she had never dealt with Verge before so she had no reason to make the statement. Glessner additionally alleges Verge does not have any evidence to support that the photo isn't authentic.

She additionally alleges Verge wanted to "prevent and impede the possible authentication of said photo."
