UPDATE:

The West Virginia State Police Department said Martin L. Hansen, 20, of Denmark, has died after drowning in Cheat Lake Friday afternoon.

Hansen was swimming with friends when he suddenly submerged twice and then failed to re-emerged, according to a press release from state police.

The victim was initially unable to be located, according to state police, but he was later recovered by the Morgantown Police Department's dive unit.

Witnesses described the scene as "pure panic."

"Three people made it to the rock. The fourth guy jumped in later, he made it about halfway across, and never surfaced," said Christian Lanham of Morgantown. "There was a bunch of us here on the rock, we called 911...that's the only thing you can do."

"Everybody was just hanging out, enjoying the first day of summer," said Grayson Brady of Fairmont. "Then, he went under and never came back up."
