BECKLEY -

Beckley Fire Department celebrated and honored a local woman today as Hazel Horwath turned 100 years old!

Members of the fire department gave Horwath a plaque as a present. Her husband, a former firefighter, died in the line of duty on Thanksgiving day in 1960.

She said she's very happy her friends and family traveled so far to join in her big day.

"I'm tickled to see them and I'm so glad they came and some of them came from California and Connecticut. All to see me on my birthday," Horwath told us.

Horwath is the widow of the only Beckley fire fighter to ever die on the job.

A big day for one family in Raleigh County, as the widow of the only firefighter to die on the job at the Beckley Fire Department reaches a milestone.

Hazel Horwath will turn 100 years old and firefighters are presenting her with a plaque the department had made specially for her.

Hazel Horwath's husband Steve, died on Nov. 24, 1960 when he responded with Fire Station No.1 to a call of heavy smoke in the nurses' quarters at Pinecrest Hospital.   According to published reports on the accident, Horwath reportedly suffered a heart attack due to the smoke inhalation he encountered.

The ceremony to honor his wife will be at noon at shelter number 5 at Little Beaver State Park.
