Four AmeriCorps programs in West Virginia are set to receive more than $2 million in federal funding, Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin, both D-W.Va., announced June 25.

The money comes from the Corporations for National and Community Service, which oversees AmeriCorps Programs.

Rockefeller, who came to West Virginia as a VISTA volunteer in 1964, has worked to secure funding for AmeriCorps and similar community service programs during his time in the U.S. Senate.

"A commitment to public service brought me to West Virginia and it has been the foundation for my service to the state for nearly 50 of its 150 years," Rockefeller said. "AmeriCorps and other national public service programs provide direct opportunities to make the future brighter for communities and individuals across our state."

Manchin said the grants are appropriate because they reflect the willingness West Virginians have to help others.

"Giving back to our communities — contributing our time and service to improve the places that we live for our neighbors and for future generations — is such an important principle to instill in ourselves and our children," Manchin said. "I am proud of West Virginians for the service they provide and am pleased that this funding will help make our homes, or communities and our beautiful state an even better place to live."

The following AmeriCorps programs will receive grants:

  • West Virginia University Research Corporation, Energy Express AmeriCorps—Morgantown: $1,198,587
  • Appalachian Forest Heritage Area, Enhancing Assets to Benefit Communities—Charleston: $260,000
  • United Way of West Virginia, LifeBridge AmeriCorps Veteran Corps—Charleston: $252,699
  • United Way of Central West Virginia, LifeBridge AmeriCorps—Charleston: $930,998
