Police inform drivers of new laws

Posted: Updated:

New laws for drivers will go into affect next month and local police are spreading the word.
The Lewisburg Police Department set up a seat belt check point on Route 219 Wednesday afternoon.

They're telling drivers that as of July 1st, using a cell phone behind the wheel will be a primary offense.  This means a driver may be pulled over if seen operating a phone, where in the past they had to be violating another law such as speeding.  Also, drivers not wearing a seat belt will be receiving tickets starting July 9th.

Police say hands free devices are permitted under the new law.
