The Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society chapter at West Virginia University-Parkersburg has been named a five-star chapter.

WVU-P students and advisers were recognized at a national convention in Virginia.

Phi Theta Kappa chapters have five levels of engagement that progress from local, campus involvement to regional and then international involvement. The Five Star Chapter Development Plan guides chapters, including WVU-P's Sigma Omega chapter, through each level. Using the plan, chapters can enhance their working relationships with college administration by becoming more active on campus and in the community.

"I am so proud of our students and their advisers for achieving this status," said WVU-P President Marie Foster Gnage.  "I always encourage students to be a part of Phi Theta Kappa because it provides many valuable opportunities and experiences."

To achieve five-star status, the Sigma Omega chapter accomplished a series of goals established at the beginning of the 2012-2013 academic year. All PTK chapters must complete a college project each year, and WVU-P decided to focus their project on college completion. Students and their family members were asked to sign a "commit to complete" pledge at the beginning of each semester.

Additionally, the chapter partnered with the WVUP-P anti-bullying task force to create two videos aimed at ending bullying. Students participated in a kick-off event and distributed bracelets for the cause.

Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with 1,250 chapters on community colleges nationwide. More than 2 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918. Advisers for WVU-P's Sigma Omega chapter are Dianne Davis and Violet Mosser.
