The Black Diamond Trophy is back up for grabs.

It may still be some eight years away, but West Virginia University and Virginia Tech have reached an agreement to renew the old rivalry, which last played out on the football field in the 2005 season.

The Mountaineers will host the first game of a home and home series on Sept. 18, 2021 before heading to Blacksburg to take on the Hokies on Sept. 24, 2022.

WVU athletic director Oliver Luck has made it clear since the Mountaineers left the Big East for the Big 12 last year that he would like to put more natural rivals back on the gridiron slate in the future and Virginia Tech becomes the first of those to return to the schedule.

"During my three years as Athletic Director at West Virginia University, I have heard from legions of Mountaineer fans, particularly those in the southern part of the state, who have expressed their strong sentiments to renew the football rivalry with Virginia Tech," Luck said in a statement released Wednesday morning. "This game is great for college football. We all know that the two schools have extraordinary fan bases, and both schools will be counting down the days until the Hokies and the Mountaineers meet again."

That countdown will be somewhere in the area of 3,000 days, but the idea is accurate: fans want this one.

The last time the two teams met, Marcus Vick led Virginia Tech into Morgantown and despite the breakout performance from freshman running back Steve Slaton, the Hokies were too much for the Mountaineers. A 34-17 loss for WVU handed the Black Diamond Trophy back to Tech, where it will remain at least until 2021.

That loss in the fifth game of the 2005 season was WVU's only setback in an 11-1 Sugar Bowl and Big East championship season.

"I want to thank Virginia Tech Athletic Director Jim Weaver and Coach Frank Beamer for their efforts in helping to get the two teams back on the football field. It will be a great day for all involved when the rivalry is renewed," Luck said.

The game in 2021 will be the 52nd meeting between the schools in a rivalry that dates back to 1912 and was played every year beginning in 1973 before it was put on hold in 2005. WVU holds a 28-22-1 overall series advantage.
