Development threatens Berkeley County historic districts

Posted: Updated:

MARTINSBURG, WV (AP) — The Berkeley County Historic Society's chairman says a majority of the county's historic districts could lose that designation because of development.

Todd Funkhouser tells The Journal that there's no screening between historic districts and modern housing developments.

More than 25 historic districts are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Funkhouser says a recent tour of the county with State Historic Preservation Office representatives revealed that new, nonconforming construction has compromised most of the districts.

A district's loss of the historic designation wouldn't affect individual properties listed on the national register.

Funkhouser says residents can preserve their historic districts by planting trees and shrubs between new developments and existing properties.
