CHARLESTON (AP) -

Head Start programs in Monroe and Nicholas counties are sharing nearly $1.5 million in federal funding.

Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin, and Rep. Nick Rahall announced the funding on Friday.

Officials say the Nicholas Community Action Partnership in Summersville will receive more than $781,000 and the Monroe County Board of Education in Union is getting more than $641,000.

Head Start is a national development program for low-income children that helps prepare them for school from a young age. It offers eligible children and their families access to critical health, nutrition, education, and social services. The program is administered by the Department of Health and Human Services.
