The National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium recently was appointed to the governor's Natural Gas Vehicle Transition Team.

Gov Earl Ray Tomblin appointed the West Virginia University program as part of the Natural Gas Task Force's final report, WVU officials recently announced.

In the report, the task force urged that the program — along with representatives from the West Virginia Division of Highways Division of Highways, Division of Energy, Tax Department, Fleet Management Office, Purchasing Division, the governor's office and the West Virginia Board of Education — form the transition team.

The team will review agency plans to accomplish the goal to have 25 percent of the state fleet fueled by natural gas in four years.

The team will hear presentations of ideas to maximize the state's return on investment by using natural gas.

The task force also recommended the program to be used as an educational resource for the community and technical college system of West Virginia, expanding the workforce by training natural gas vehicle technicians.

Established in June 2012, the task force's 21-member team is comprised of public and private  industry experts.

In its final report, the task force recommended transitioning a portion of the state's vehicle fleet to natural gas, transitioning the state bus fleet to propane, increasing the maximum amount of a tax credit for building natural gas fueling infrastructure to $400,000 and encouraging the private sector to develop a plan to educate the public.
