There soon will be a new way to keep a finger on the pulse of workshops and performances throughout Southern West Virginia during the week of the 2013 National Scout Jamboree.

A mobile app from the Third District Accelerator Team will be unveiled during a 10 a.m. July 15 news conference at the Erma C. Byrd Higher Education Center in Beckley.

The Third District Accelerator is funded by the U.S. Economic Development Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Appalachian Regional Commission.

Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., said scouting families will be able to look forward to being "plugged in to all the excitement during the most tech-connected Jamboree in history."

"Let's be clear, this is not your father's Jamboree," Rahall said in a news release. "My message to Scouts and their families is ‘be prepared' for some fun and challenging new Appalachian trails to blaze."

The app was created for Experience WV, and several other organizations, such as Concord University, Marshall University, the Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing and TechConnect, are collaborating to boost business, tourism and advanced manufacturing throughout Southern West Virginia. The Third District Accelerator provides business and technical support, including workshops and training.

Holly Clark, program director for Experience West Virginia, said the app will be useful to guests who are new to the area as well as those already familiar with mountain culture.

"The agenda is chock full of exciting offerings," Clark said in a news release. "This mobile app gives people a one-stop shop to review all of our entertaining and educational workshops.

"This app will be a guide to all things Appalachia during the week of the Jamboree."

Programming is open to all visitors, local residents, Boy Scouts and their families.

Experience West Virginia is a new initiative sponsored by Bluefield State College, Concord University, West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, West Virginia State University, New River Gorge Regional Development Authority, WV Campus Compact and three area Community and Technical Colleges: Bridgemont, New River and Southern West Virginia.
