Locals are coming out to Summers County and celebrating a legend this weekend.

59News took us to Talcott for the 17th annual John Henry Days festival.

"I'm having so much fun. There's two fun parts, watching the parade down and getting all the candy," said 3rd grader Dalton Kirby.

"This is my first time here and I'm really excited," 5th grader Angela Wauer told us.

"We've got a beautiful parade and a lot of vendors and a lot of yard sales coming in and out of Talcott. It seems like everyone's having a great time," President of John Henry Days, Bill Dillon said.

"My littlest one, she's two. This was her first parade, she didn't know what to do she was so excited," Hinton's Judy Wooten told 59News.

"I always come to the John Henry Days. It's a really great day in history," said Alex Trout of Cashmere.

An area vendor explained why the festival is great for local businesses and the economy.

"Hopefully people are coming in from different parts of West Virginia and seeing the festival and the parade. Hopefully I'll meet different people and bring in some new clients," White Sulphur Springs entrepreneur Kevin Carpenter said.

Whether they think of him as a fact or a fiction, people in Southern West Virginia enjoy celebrating John Henry as a legend.

"Fact. Fact. Fact," answered Wooten.

"It's like George Washington history or Thomas Jefferson history. John Henry did something that nobody else had done," informed Dillon.

"Well, he had a race with a machine, and beat it," Ronceverte's Gary Martin told us.

"This is my 2nd year at John Henry. I know he was good, we all know that," Kirby added.

"I know he worked on the railroad," concluded Carpenter.

"I know he was the one that beat the machine. And why is that so cool? That a man could do what a machine couldn't," 4th grader Chase Hambric told 59News.

On Sunday, participants can enjoy a church service, car show and can join in on a rubber duck race.
