The Kanawha Valley's two community and technical colleges have merged, creating a new multi-campus institution.

BridgeValley Community and Technical College combines Bridgemont CTC, located in Montgomery, and Kanawha Valley CTC, located in South Charleston. The name represents the fusion of the two schools, reflects the uniqueness of the region and illustrates that a college education can provide a path to a successful career, said Jo Harris, the president of the new institution.

The two entities will continue to operate separately through the next academic year while the consolidation of systems and approvals are completed. Students who begin courses next fall will register under the new name.

Harris had most recently served as president of Bridgemont. During the first meeting of the consolidated board of governors, Mark Dempsey, previously chairman of the Kanawha Valley CTC board, was elected the chairman of the BridgeValley board; David Lewia, previously chairman of the Bridgemont board, was named vice-chairman; and Jan Vineyard, a member of the Kanawha Valley board was named secretary of the new board.

"The appointment of Dr. Harris and the election of board officers creates an experienced and balanced team to lead BridgeValley through the challenges ahead," said James Skidmore, chancellor of the West Virginia Community and Technical College System. "The consolidation combines the strengths of both colleges and provides additional opportunities for the citizens of the region to earn college credentials that are critical in today's workplace."

The consolidation is in accordance with Senate Bill 438, which called for the reorganization of Bridgemont and Kanawha Valley into one multi-campus institution. Existing locations will continue in Montgomery and South Charleston with one governing board and administrative structure.
