As the temperatures sore into the 90s this week, it's a good time remember your neighbors, especially the elderly.
They can have a tough time handling the heat, particularly if they don't have air conditioning at home. If possible, get them someplace that does have air conditioning, at least during hottest parts of the day. If not, close the curtains to block the sun and help keep rooms cooler. Doctors also recommend running fans and keeping plenty of water on hand.
Pets can also suffer in the heat. If they're outside, make sure they have a place to get in the shade. Provide a lot of fresh water to drink and check on them frequently.
Also remember that asphalt can be dangerous. It can burn the pads of a dog's paws, so try to keep them off streets, sidewalks, or parking lots.
