Update

Frontier Communications and the Communications Workers of America (CWA) announced that they have extended their current labor contract covering 1,600 employees in West Virginia.

CWA agreed to Frontier's request to extend the contract, which was set to expire Friday at midnight. The contract extension will be in effect until October 12, 2013 while negotiations between the two groups continue.

Frontier and the CWA actively negotiated throughout July.  CWA workers rallied in Fairmont in July to show their solidarity in negotiations with Frontier.

Original Story

Frontier Communications and Communication Workers of America are negotiating contracts for 1,600 Frontier employees throughout West Virginia.

The existing contract between Frontier and the CWA is set to expire at midnight on August 2. Frontier and the CWA have been in negotiations for the past three weeks, said the CWA. "Frontier will bargain in good faith with the union, just as it has done in past negotiations that led to contract ratifications in West Virginia with CWA Locals 2276 and 2001 and IBEW Locals 317 and 2035," said Dana Waldo, Frontier Senior Vice President and General Manager for West Virginia.

CWA Local 2004 and 2011 are planning a rally to show solidarity on Saturday, July 20 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Palatine Park in Fairmont. Guest speakers will include CWA Vice-President Edward Mooney, House of Delegates Speaker Tim Miley, D-Harrison, Majority Whip and UMWA Intl. Vice-President Delegate Mike Caputo, D-Marion, and others, according to the CWA.

The contract covers former Verizon employees who became Frontier employees in the 2009 acquisition of Verizon's landline business in an $8.6 billion deal. Frontier said it has invested $300 million to improve and advance West Virginia's communications infrastructure.
