Students prepare for 18th Hatfield-McCoy Senior Bowl

The 18th annual Hatfield-McCoy Senior Football Bowl game kicks off next month.

Cliffs Natural Resources, announced its sponsorship of the annual Hatfield-McCoy Senior Football Bowl game Thursday. The game is scheduled for Saturday, August 3rd at the James H. "Buck" Harless Stadium on the campus of Mingo Central High School in Newtown, W.V.

"We are thrilled to have our friends at Cliffs Natural Resources sponsor the Hatfield-McCoy Senior Bowl game again this year," said Coach Yogi Kinder, Mingo Central H.S. football coach and organizer of the game. "Cliffs is a great corporate partner. They understand the excitement and tradition this game brings to not only the players but for football fans throughout southern West Virginia."

The rosters of the West Virginia and Kentucky teams consist of players from nearly twenty high schools. The West Virginia team will be coached by Mingo Central assistant coach Joey Fields while the Kentucky squad will be coached by former Belfry High School and University of Kentucky standout, David Jones.

"The Hatfield-McCoy Senior Bowl is a football tradition in southern West Virginia and Cliffs is very excited to again be a part of it," said Ryan Thorn, public affairs representative for Cliffs. "Cliffs' sponsorship of this event is an example of its commitment to the communities where we operate and our employees live."

This is the second year the contest will be played on the turf field of Mingo Central's "Buck" Harless Stadium. For its first sixteen years the games were played at Matewan High School's Tiger Stadium before it was consolidated with Williamson, Burch and Gilbert High Schools two years ago.

Last year, West Virginia topped Kentucky 37-12 and currently holds an 11-6 lead in the series.
