SportsZone: British Open, WVU players helping out and more

SPORTSZONE WRAP:

Thursday was the first round of the British Open in Muirfield and Zach Johnson finished the day on the top of the leaderboard -5, followed by Rafael Cabrera-Bello and Mark O'Meara tied at -4.

Tiger Woods finished the day -2 as he tries to win his first major championship in 5 years.  Phil Mickelson who won the Scottish Open just 4 days ago, faired the same as Woods.  With a lot of complaints about playing conditions, Mickelson expressed how he dealt with the elements.

"There's enough wind that it's challenging to maneuver shots, you have to hit shots to accommodate the wind, to get the ball coming into the greens at the right angles and stuff," said Mickelson.

Charl Schwartzel had a rough first day in Scotland. He bogeyed 3 in a row before getting to hole 15 where he lost his temper, threw his 6-iron and broke it in half. That tantrum ended in a double bogey.

Switching gears to the Boy Scouts, they will continue their service project initiatives Friday, with the help of West Virginia University's football team.

Up to 90 players as well as coaches will be joining scouts working on projects at Summersville Elementary and City Youth Center.

Big 12 pre-season poll came out Thursday, WVU was projected to finish 8th in the conference, Oklahoma State was projected to finish first.
