ARDEN, WV (AP) — Authorities say increased patrols have reduced drownings and other incidents at a popular river hangout in Barbour County.

The site known as Party Rock near Arden has been the scene of numerous drownings over the years. The site gets its name from a large rock in the river.

Barbour County Sheriff John Hawkins told The Exponent Telegram of Clarksburg that the only reported incidents this summer have been a person and a pet stranded on a rock.

County Commissioner Phil Hart said residents have become more aware of the river's dangers since the crackdown began.

"People in the past were violating laws like parking, drunk driving, underage drinking. Our plan is to continue the same (preventative) steps until someone comes up with a better idea," he told the newspaper.

"That river is treacherous and dangerous at night time," he said.

Hawkins said that the crackdown is a joint effort of local police, state police and the Division of Natural Resources.
