SPAIN -

The death toll now stands at 77 after a high speed train derailed in northwestern Spain Wednesday evening.

More than 130 people were injured when the train, on it's way from Madrid, went off the tracks before entering the station at Santiago de Compostela just before 9pm local time.

Government official, Samuel Juarez, described what happened.

"The train was carrying around 247 passengers according to our numbers. The derailment was very violent. A train carriage landed on a lateral track and at the moment we still don't have any hypothesis for the cause of the accident."

Bodies could be seen strewn across the tracks covered in blankets. One official described the scene as 'dante-esque'.

The incident is being treated as an accident although no official cause will be reported until the train's black boxes are examined.

It's one of Europe's worst train disasters in 25 years.
