    An enormous effort is underway in Fayette County to stop the spread of a massive brush fire that continues to consume more land in the New River Gorge.

New River Community and Technical College is out with a new release about its scheduled orientation classes.

According to the release, new students are required to attend one of the upcoming orientation sessions offered at the five campuses.

In the release, Tracy Evans, director of enrollment services is quoted as saying, "The orientation sessions are extremely important to new students to give them important information about the various services offered by New River to help guide their success.   We invite parents, spouses or significant other of new students to attend also."

The release said orientation includes information on student services, academic services, financial aid, security, parking, extra-curricular activities, library services and campus tours.

Orientation sessions will be held on the Nicholas County Campus in Summersville on July 31 and Aug. 6; Beckley campus Aug. 8 and 12; The Greenbrier Valley campus in Lewisburg Aug. 1 and 5; Mercer County campus in Princeton Aug. 2; and the Advanced Technology Center in Ghent Aug. 7.

Students and their parents/spouses/significant others should register in advance for the orientation by contacting the campus the student will be attending.   Attendees can select one of two sessions offered each day at each location.    The morning session is from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.   The afternoon session is from 2:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.

Students will be able to register for classes at the orientation sessions if they have not already done so.   August 9 is the last date that fall semester registrations will be accepted.   Classes begin Aug. 19.

According to the release, NRCTC serves Fayette, Greenbrier, Mercer, Monroe, Nicholas, Pocahontas, Raleigh, Summers and Webster Counties in southeastern West Virginia.   Administrative offices are located in Beckley.   Students from Virginia counties that border the service area are being offered a reduced out-of-state tuition rate for the first time this year.
