Steve Harvey Started in McDowell County

Born in Welch as a coal miner's son, this West Virginian worked his way into show business, now hosting a popular game show and his eponymous morning show.

Although he grew up in Ohio, Steve Harvey came back to the Mountain State to attend West Virginia University.

According to the Beverly Hills Courier, Harvey has worked as an insurance salesman, carpet cleaner and letter carrier. However, he climbed the ladder to fame, starting out in the mid-1980s as a stand-up comedian in Cleveland.

Just five years after starting his comedy routine, Harvey was a Johnnie Walker National Comedy Search finalist. This later lead to the start of his hosting career as he became the host of "It's Showtime at the Apollo."

But this, of course, wasn't his last claim to fame.

According to IMDB, before becoming the "Family Feud" host, Harvey was an author and he had a career in movies and television, starring in shows such as "The Proud Family," "The Steve Harvey Show" and "The Parkers" and movies including "Love Don't Cost a Thing," "You Got Served" and "Madea Goes to Jail."

In 2000, according to his foundation's website, Harvey created "The Steve Harvey Morning Show," where he gave out relationship advice through segments such as the "Strawberry Letter."

"This segment's popularity led to a book deal with HarperCollins," his foundation's website states.

Harvey wrote "Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man" in 2009 and "Straight Talk, No Chaser: How to Find and Keep a Man" a year later.

The same year as his second book's release, Harvey ended up becoming the host of "Family Feud."

Harvey also wanted to give something back to the community, founding The Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation with his wife Marjorie.

According to smharveyfoundation.org, the foundation's goals are to help young adults by providing scholarships, pair them with mentors and help provide internships and employment opportunities to help them in the future.

"The mission is to ensure that the needs of the whole child are met through the development of programs and support of community-based organizations that foster excellence in the areas of health, education and social well-being within urban and ethnically diverse communities," the website states.

The website says Harvey created the annual Disney's Dreamers Academy, a mentoring program for teenagers, and The Steve Harvey Mentoring Weekend for Young Men, a camp for teenage boys without fathers to "share insights and skills to navigate manhood."
