Legendary coach holds basketball camp

Posted: Updated:

Dave Barksdale is a basketball legend in our community, most notably for leading Woodrow Wilson's basketball team to 5 state titles in his 17 year coaching tenure at the school.

For years his title has been coach. But to many, he's also a teacher.

Those lessons are taught on the court and the same ones that the kids at the "Eye of the Tiger basketball camp" were learning were the ones he taught his own son Ty. Ty grew up to love basketball and returned to help coach the camp, years after he was a camper himself.

"I remember coming to Dad's camp when I was a kid, so it's really special for me to have a chance to help him," said the younger Barksdale.

The kids discovered new drills and techniques, and had fun just being themselves.

Coach Barksdale's two granddaughters, Marcy and Channing, were among his students. They were already soaking in some of "Grandy's" knowledge.

"Pivoting, dribbling, and shooting," the girls said they've learned at camp.

This is the third week of camps Barksdale has held this summer and his long basketball coaching career is not ending anytime soon.

His son said basketball keeps his dad young, and it's what he gets excited about every day.

Barksdale has dedicated much of his life to coaching, and while the last day of camp is Friday, the lessons learned at camp will last a lifetime.
