MORGANTOWN, WV -

The West Virginia University Foundation announced July 24 that its "A State of Minds: The Campaign for West Virginia's University," had reached 89 percent of its goal.

The campaign has raised $660 million, and it still has two years to reach its $750 million goal.

"I am continuously overwhelmed by the pride and passion people have for our university, and I thank them from the bottom of my heart," WVU President Jim Clements said in a news release. "This campaign means so much to the future of WVU, and the support we have received thus far has been incredible."

The campaign marks the largest private fundraising campaign in WVU's history – three times larger than the previous campaign, "Building Greatness," which ran from 1998-2003.

Some of the campaign's donations have included endowed scholarships and fellowships for students, professorships, financial support for new learning facilities and enhancements for academic and athletic programs.

Some of the recent major gifts have included a $3.4 million donation from the estate of Dr. Pat Fehl to the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences and a large in-kind donation of music from Jay Chattaway, an alumnus who composed music for "Star Trek."

"Thanks to the tremendous generosity of our alumni and friends, we are on track to exceed our goal," Foundation President and CEO Wayne King said in a news release. "We've had a very positive response since we launched the public phase of the campaign a year ago, and fully expect that to continue through the end of the campaign."

The campaign's fundraising focuses on six university-wide campaign priority areas that align with the school's 2020 Strategic Plan for the Future. Some of those priorities include advancing the research initiative of the university and enabling WVU to improve West Virginia's health, economy and quality of life.

The campaign has a 23-member national volunteer committee along with West Virginia and regional volunteer chairmen, and each college and school at the university has its own campaign committee with a chairman serving on the national committee.

Robert Reynolds, a 1974 alumnus who is chairman of Putnam Investments is the national co-chairman along with Cadrillion Capital President Verl Purdy, who is a 1964 graduate of WVU. James "Buck" Harless serves as the national campaign honorary chairman.
