INSTITUTE, WV -

Charleston-area businessman Tom Susman is among those serving in new roles on West Virginia State University's board of governors. He was elected chairman of the school's board for the fiscal year that began July 1.

Susman, the managing member of TSG Consulting, previously served as the secretary of the board of governors. He succeeds as president Charleston attorney Larry L. Rowe, who served as board chairman for the previous two years.

In addition to his business career, Susman served in the West Virginia House of Delegates from 1987 to 1992. He later served as a cabinet member under Gov. Bob Wise.

Ann Brothers Smith, a WVSU alumna who retired as an educator in Detroit, is the new vice chair of the board. She has been active in alumni affairs for the university and serves as president emeritus of the WVSU National Alumni Association.

A native of the Kanawha Valley, Smith has a long association with the school.

L. Vincent Williams, a Nashville, Tenn., attorney and WVSU alum, has been elected as the board's secretary. A West Virginia native, Williams is a graduate of the former Alderson High School in Greenbrier County where he lettered in basketball and football.

Debbie Jarvis is the board's new classified staff representative. Elected to a two-year term by the WVSU classified staff in April, Jarvis is serving as the interim associate registrar at the school.

The board, which provides oversight to the university, consists of nine members appointed by the governor of West Virginia as well as representatives of the school's faculty, students and classified staff. The board next meets in September.
