Independence Football: New coach, new attitude

Posted: Updated:

While the Independence football field is being updated, the team was on their practice field. But, that was a minor change compared to what the team has been through. They got a new coach just a couple weeks ago, and so far they are responding well to head coach Chris Vicars.

"Looking good so far, we are adjusting to it real well, able to play real good, picking up the new plays real easy," said senior quarterback Brian Sexton.

It's Vicars first year as head coach, but he's not new to the sport. He's been coaching football for 17 years. That doesn't mean the quick turnaround from his hire to 2-a-days was easy.

"It's been a struggle so far but I have a good group of assistant coaches that are really wanting to help out," Vicars said.

He also has many players returning from the 5-5 2012 team. A lot of pressure will be Sexton, but the veteran QB was not letting the hype get to him.

"I just don't really think about it, just go back and do what I always do, go out there and play my game. When you start thinking about it to much that's when you start screwing up," he said.

About 50 patriots came out to play this year and the top dog is happy to have them.

"You know, the best part about it is the kids, they've been awesome so far so I like interacting with those guys and that's what I'm here to do," said Vicars.

The Patriots will open their season at Midland Trail August 30th.
