Tomblin announces plan for WVCHIP expansion

CHARLESTON, WV (AP) — Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has announced plans to make dependents of state government employees eligible for the West Virginia Children's Health Insurance Program.

Tomblin says in a news release that the goal is to protect improve children's quality of life and future by providing a more affordable insurance option for their families.

The change requires federal approval. Tomblin says the WVCHIP agency will notify the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services about the plan Sept. 1. Authorization is expected by next Jan. 1, with enrollment beginning for eligible dependents of state employees July 1, 2014.

To qualify, applicants must meet certain income guidelines. More information is available at www.chip.wv.gov .
