Westside gains new coach, but loses QB to injury in scrimmage

Posted: Updated:

The start of the 2013 high school football season brings lots of changes to Westside, including a new coach.

In February Darren Thomas stepped down as head coach and now Larry Cook, an assistant last year, is now the top dog at Westside. But, this isn't his first rodeo.

"Same old hat kind of. Assistant for 7 years, before that I was head coach at various schools for 13 years so you know its worked out pretty well. The kids are responding, the community is responding, I'm just thankful for the opportunity," said Cook.

The Renegades also have another change at Quarterback. Justin Cogar broke his ankle in a scrimmage against Shady Spring Saturday.

The offense had to adjust to fill the void at QB but luckily for Coach Cook, there was enough experienced players on his team to move around.

"Last year we were relatively young. Sophomore starters become Junior starters and so forth so I think the experience and depth will help us this year," he said.

Included in that depth chart are two standout upperclassmen who are worthy of watching this season.

"Mike Mullens, Junior tailback, worked hard in the weight room and has good quickness and speed. Matt Harless a senior, 4 year starter at linebacker, he's a real weight room warrior."

Westside hopes to improve their 5-5 season from a year ago.
