    HINTON -- The Hinton Hope Foundation, along with the John Henry Historical Society, are hosting a fundraiser gala on Saturday, May 10 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The proceeds of the event will go towards the renovation of the new John Henry Museum and Gift Shop in Talcott. A World War II tank leading ship will visit Charleston's Haddad Riverfront Park Aug. 29 through Sept. 3.

People may tour the 328-foot-long USS LST 325 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily.Cost of the tour is $10 for adults, $5 for children 18 and younger and free for children younger than 6-years-old.

These ships could carry 20 Sherman tanks in the giant hole called the "tank deck" and were the only ships made to go around the world and deposit cargo onto a hostile beaches and then return for another load, according to a news release.

The ships could carry up to 500 soldiers, tons of fuel, ammunition and supplies and 30-40 vehicles on the main deck.

The LSTs were used during World War II, Korea and the Vietnam conflicts.

This will be the first time an ocean going US Naval ship of this type will travel the Kanawha since this type of ship traveled down the Ohio River from Pittsburgh to the open sea during the World War II years.
