Marion County Circuit Clerk Barbara Core will retire Aug. 30 after 26 years in office, the West Virginia Supreme Court announced Aug. 26.

A ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Marion County Courthouse to honor Core and announce her replacement, who will be sworn into office that day, according to a news release from the state Supreme Court.

"Barb is a titan in the circuit clerks' world, a remarkable visionary who embraced new technologies long before any other circuit clerk's office. In a word, she's amazing," Steve Canterbury, state Supreme Court administrative director, said in the news release.

Marion County is participating in the pilot program for the new e-filing system.

The state's highest court established the unified operating system for all county circuit clerks to address the confusing system for numbering cases, which was shown by a case in Kanawha County when a person was erroneously released from jail.

As part of the new, unified system, the state Supreme Court is contracting with Morgantown company Software Systems to provide the system in the 14 pilot counties of: Berkeley, Braxton, Cabell, Hampshire, Harrison, Jefferson, Lewis, Lincoln, Marion, Morgan, Ohio, Randolph, Upshur and Wood. The pilot counties should be up and running within the next year, according to information from the Supreme Court.

Counties will not have to pay for installation, maintenance or operation of the unified information system. It will be funded by the state Supreme Court.

Canterbury and Matt Arrowood, director of circuit clerk services, will discuss the e-filing system at the ceremony.
