Farmers Almanac predicts cold winter, what do you think?

Posted: Updated:

It is the end of summer and most people are trying to soak up the sun while it lasts.  The predictions for the 2014 winter are in and one reference book is predicting a "bitterly cold winter."

"I hope it is wrong," Spencer Barletta a college student from New York said.

"Biting cold" and "piercing cold." These are some of the words The Farmers Almanac is using to describe winter 2014. Some of the people we told about the prediction are not happy about it.

"Oh no what are we going to do, I am going to freeze," Brandon Parker said.

The publication hit stores on Monday.  While we couldn't find a copy in our area, we checked it out online and it's a frosty forecast for our future.

59News wanted to put the accuracy of the book to the test. Our news crews went to our local library and checked out the 2013 version of The Farmer's Almanac.

The book's prediction for the summer of 2013 said it would be wetter than usual.  We asked folks on the street to describe this summer and the majority used the word "wet" or rainy."  Many agreed the prediction for the summer of 2013 was correct.

But do people put value in what the Almanac states?  We went to find out.

"I think there is a little bit typically people are usually successful in predicting the general nature of the winter," Brandon Parker said.

And Scott Laney agrees. "Yeah I believe it. I've heard it and I go by the Almanac I believe it and I've heard a lot of people saying we are going to have a bad winter."

"Honestly I am not 100 percent sure I know some people read it and some people take it as the Gospel truth so I just guess it depends  on how you are," Spencer Barletta said.

The book has been published for 197 years and local retailers said it should be in stores this week.
