Update:

Two people are dead and another is injured after a motor vehicle accident on Route 60 in Fayette County.

The accident happened around 2:30 p.m. on Monday.   Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler said in a press release the Fayette County 911 Center notified his department of a single-vehicle crash near Hico.   It was reported the vehicle had overturned, two of the occupants had been ejected and one was trapped inside of the vehicle.   A unit from General Ambulance was at the scene and actually witnessed the wreck, and additional EMS units from General Ambulance Service and Jan Care Ambulance Service, units from the Ansted and Nuttall Fire Departments and Fayette County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found one person had been ejected from the vehicle and this individual was pronounced dead at the scene.   A second person, identified as Daniel Allen Smith, 32, of Fayetteville was partially ejected out of the back window of the vehicle.   EMS began CPR on him.   He was removed from the vehicle by firefighters and was taken to CAMC by Heathnet Air Ambulance Service.   He is listed in stable condition.   The third person was trapped in the overturned vehicle and had to be extricated by the fire department using the Jaws of Life.   He was also pronounced dead at the scene.   The dead were taken to Dodd, Payne, and Hess Funeral Home in Fayetteville for examination by the medical examiners office.   The identity of the two deceased individuals is not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.

According to the press release, the preliminary investigation into this crash show the Pontiac Sunfire was traveling East on U.S. Route 60 at an extremely high rate of speed and was engaged in passing several other vehicles.    The driver lost control when trying to renter the right lane and struck an embankment.    The vehicle then began rolling and then went airborne before landing on its top in the roadway.   The accident was witnessed by several people.    Its not clear, right now, which of the three was driving.

"It is not known at this time whether drugs or alcohol were factors in this collision," said Sheriff Kessler, "but statements from witnesses at the scene indicate that excessive speed and reckless driving certainly played a role in this collision."
